Background

Republic of Macedonia has been one of the rare countries on the Balkans which, during the dissolution of former Yugoslavia, succeeded to avoid the whirlwind of the war. Unfortunately, the year 2001 will be remembered by the war which lasted more than 6 months and which brought nothing but destruction of the Society, cultural monuments, ruining the peace, grown hatred between ethnic groups, undermining of interethnic relations, lost of the trust and tolerance between the citizens, absence of social activities, etc.

Priority Needs

  • Building and maintaining confidence and trust;
  • Getting to know each other (tradition, culture, religion, language);
  • Tolerance, dialogue, conscious consolidation of the values of democracy, respect, cohabitation, peace keeping, etc.;
  • Discovering and support to new initiatives (initiatives by citizens’ groups);
  • Networking of NGOs and informal citizens’ groups;
  • Civic and democratic education.

Program priority objectives

  • setting up and development of better relations between the different groups in the ethnically mixed communities;

  • build up of mutual trust through learning about the tradition, culture, religion and language.

  • opening communication between the different ethnic communities

  • promotion of the values of the democracy, dialogue, tolerance, coexistence and preservation of the peace,

  • discovering and support to the new initiatives of the informal civil groups; and

  • cooperation of the NGOs and the informal civil groups.

Target groups

  • Groups with different ethnic backgrounds, ages, and genders (children, youth, students, adults (teachers, unemployed…), etc.);
  • NGOs;
  • NGOs and citizens groups in co-operation with media or how to work with the media;
